Our Community Service Programs and Special Programs are structured to enable us to harness the vast resources of our membership to address the needs of their individual communities.
GFWC Community Service Programs and Special Programs focus on major issues that affect our communities daily—supporting women’s health, preserving natural resources, promoting literacy and equality, citizen advocacy, and encouraging volunteer service—and fall into the following areas of focus:
HOW CAN YOUR CLUB MAKE A GLOBAL IMPACT?
The GFWC International Outreach Community Service Program is designed to enable members to become better world citizens through advocacy, education, and action, which will, in turn, affect change in and for our global friends and their communities.
We have supported medical mission trips to underserved areas, U.N. Shot at Life program, and Operation Christmas Child.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR WORLD THROUGH THE LIFE OF A CHILD
GFWC Juniors’ Special Program: Advocates for Children is designed to encourage all General, Junior, and Juniorette clubs to make a difference in our world by becoming advocates for children. Clubs may choose to organize projects that benefit children in their community, state, or world.
In 2017, in addition to work through the schools and Action Ministries, our club supplied blankets and stuffed animals to the local Sheriff and Police departments to use with children in crisis.
“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
-William Butler Yeats
How often have we read this quote and wondered how we can light a fire? Education opens doors to a new life of opportunities for our youth as well as those returning to school, whether it is in a degree
program or a self-improvement course. Aren’t we learning and expanding our knowledge our whole life? Each time we pick up a book to read, we are acquiring some insight into another step into the world of knowledge and learning. This is one huge way we may eventually make a difference in our lives, communities, and the world.
In 2017, we provided support to reading programs for local schools.
The GFWC Arts Community Service Program encourages
members to promote and support arts activities in all communities. It is designed to inspire clubwomen. Create programs and projects that include music, dance, drama, theatre, and other arts-related areas, both traditional and innovative. The artistic experience can be outward reaching or for inner satisfaction.
In 2017 we supported the Heartland Art Association and their scholorships for students.
The GFWC Conservation Community Service Program is designed for members to gain an appreciation for our environment. Through preservation, maintenance, and restoration of our natural resources, it strives to educate members about the importance of beautifying our communities; preserving, maintaining, and restoring natural resources; and stimulating citizen action to address these concerns. Our natural
resources include, but are not limited to, water, trees, plants, air, land, and wildlife.
The GFWC Home Life Community Service Program is designed to inform members of issues that affect the well-being of individuals, families, and communities by providing opportunities and resources to meet and address needs through volunteering. Through this program, clubs may develop and implement creative projects that promote a healthy lifestyle; increase awareness, prevention, research, and treatment of disease; target personal development; address the issues of hunger, inadequate housing, and homelessness; and/or prevent or correct financial difficulties.
In 2017, we provided support to Newton Crisis Pregnancy Center, Independent Enterprises, Newton and Rockdale food banks, Action Ministries Super Pack program, and American Red Cross Relay for Life.
The goal of the GFWC Signature Program: Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention is to increase awareness of and help prevent the widespread occurrence of domestic abuse in communities across the nation by supporting existing activities, working with various established programs, and initiating educational opportunities for club members and local citizens. GFWC is a powerful voice for those who have no voice.
In 2017, we supported Project Renewal.
CIVIC AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES ARE KEY COMPONENTS IN OUR LIVES
The GFWC Public Issues Community Service Program is designed to actively connect members with effective projects and activities relating to civic and social responsibilities.
We support our Veterans by delivering socks and magazines to VA hospital patients on a regular basis.
